Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 6 red ruby potatoes diced
  • 1 onion diced
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 carrot diced
  • ½ cup green peas
  • 1 habanero (optional) minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce plus more for seasoning
  • 1 cup water
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large sauté pan, brown the ground beef over medium heat for 7-10 minutes.
  • Add the onion and garlic to the ground beef and cook for another 3 minutes until the onion is softened.
  • Toss in the habaneros, carrots, green peas, and potatoes. Mix with the ground beef and cook for another 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the tomato sauce, water, soy sauce, fish sauce, and pepper to taste. Stir to combine. Cover the sauté pan and reduce to medium-low heat. Simmer for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are just cooked.
  • Season with additional pepper or fish sauce to taste. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. I used 96% lean ground beef and didn't strain the oil.
  2. If you don't want to use habaneros, try using red or green bell peppers for a milder recipe. See Sam’s Pro Tips for this Filipino Beef Giniling for further discussion.
  3. If you don't have ground beef, you can use ground pork or chicken as great alternatives. For added sweetness, add a couple teaspoons of sugar if desired.
